Walking Dunes

The Walking Dunes are part of Hither Hills State Park, on Long Island, NY, six miles east of Amagansett. Three tall U-shaped dunes define the area. The Dunes actually "walk," covering an average distance of over three feet per year. The short thick branches of trees hint at the sand piled on them over the years by the Dunes' walk. Some of those sticking out found their way to ground water and live on, as explained by the Phantom Forest sign. A bog area permits flowers, including two kinds of wild orchids, sundew (a carnivorous plant) and cranberries to grow. The easy mile-long loop trail reveals various environments.
